January 11, 2012 - Press Release issued

With civil rights veteran Dr. Helena Hicks present. along with representatives of Occupy Baltimore and many others, the group made a commitment at the Jan. 4th planning meeting to March from Union Baptist Church to Read's Drug store at Lexington & Howard Streets, before Marching onto Washington D.C.

The neighborhood where we will be marching is significant.  The State of Maryland broke its promise to provide 800 construction and labor jobs to local residents from this zip code to build a proposed new State Center Complex.

Our March is also less than two blocks from the State unemployment office, underscoring the problem of joblessness for all Marylanders. There will also be a special “Jobs, not Jails” contingent to highlight this important issue, along with crisis of youth unemployment which is now over 56%.  We will be demanding no youth jail. We will rally at the Read's drug store to briefly announce a campaign to stop the demolition of Read's drug store and then continue through Baltimore City to Route 1.

Can you help?

REGISTER / SIGN UP TO PARTICIPATE IN THE WALK TO WASHINGTON D.C. by sending an email to or call 443-909-8964. We will send you all the necessary information. All ages and physical abilities are welcome. We would also like to include you in meetings and orientations prior to the March.

BECOME AN OFFICIAL SPONSOR OF A WALKER! Collect just $1 from 41 friends – that's a dollar a mile. This will make the difference in making our March possible. Once you collect the money – write a check/money order for $41 to the Solidarity Center (earmark/Jobs March) and send to Jobs March, 703 E. 37th St., Baltimore, Maryland 21218. (We can send you a pledge form to use to solicit donations.)

Can you donate or loan sleeping bags, blankets, air mattresses, sleeping pads? We expect to be sleeping at churches, community centers, union halls, whatever is available, so bedding is needed. Most of those who have signed up to walk, including high school students, do not have those items. We need water, and non-perishable instant food like energy bars, cookies, candy and fruit that doesn't spoil like apples and oranges. We need vehicles and drivers who are able to act as a support system (you will need to drive very slowly and be able to work as a team). Nurses, medics and doctors are needed who can either walk with us or be on call for a part of the March. We also need legal volunteers who can also act on a stand by basis. Videographers, writers and alternative media people – we are counting on you to document this history. A journalist from the Afro-American newspaper has committed to be with us for the walk – but we need everyone to document this event – from the church to Washington D.C.

Donations are urgently needed. We have encountered many expenses, printing, mailings. We have past unpaid bills to pay, but also we need to have literature and fliers for door-to-door this week, poster making and art materials, a vinyl banner that will hold up in rain, and cash to help with gas expenses and to make sure the very young and those with limited resources can get a burger, coffee or soda along the way. Please make checks out to Solidarity Center (earmark Dr. King Jobs March) and send to 703 E. 37th St, Baltimore, Maryland 21218 or donate online. Let us know if you put a check in the mail by emailing us at so that we can be looking for your donation and planning our budget. Thank you, in advance.

If you are planning to March to Washington D.C. please email and register so that we can include you in discussions prior to the event. At the Thursday Planning Meeting it was agreed to make sure participants filled out contact info, such as emergency and medical information, where appropriate, and that participants agree to general principles of no drugs, alcohol or weapons. In the case of minors, mentors have parent permission slips that need to be filled out. We are also asking marchers to bring one extra set of clothing, in case it rains. We will have cars to reasonably store things.
